The Healing Power of Self-Image

“Our minds have a vast capacity for Healing through images”

Mark Wolynn, It Didn’t Start With You

Imagine someone in a park.

What are they doing? What are they wearing?

Your imagination is painting a picture.

Now, imagine they’re wearing a dress.

Or perhaps they’re wearing a blue shirt.

The image in your mind has changed.

You can change and shape the images your mind creates.

You can add or remove details, and change colours, shapes, and sizes.

Your self-image works in the same way.

How often do you feel unworthy because of the words others have spoken to you?

What you hear and think about creates an image of who you are.

If you grew up with an abusive family member or spent years in an abusive relationship, your self-image has likely been shaped by their hurtful words.

The damage isn’t just physical - it’s emotional and psychological, weaving a complex tapestry of trauma.

Violence can distort self-perception, instilling feelings of shame, guilt, and unworthiness.

But you have the power to change those images.

Yes, it takes time and effort, but it is absolutely possible.

Healing happens in the awareness of your self-image

Redefining self-image can break your negative patterns.

It’s about seeing yourself not as a victim, but as a beacon of strength and survival.

Healing happens when you change your self-image into a loving vision of yourself.

A vision of yourself as powerful, capable, and strong enough to live your life to the fullest.

Building a Positive Self-Image

Grab a journal, a piece of paper or your phone and find a quiet space.

1. Visualize Your Self at its Best

Close your eyes and visualize yourself at your best.

Picture yourself confident, happy, and thriving.

  • What are you doing?

  • Who is around you?

  • How do you feel?

Write down this vision in detail.

2. Discovering Your Courage

Write down three instances when you sought help or showed courage.

These could be moments of asking for support, standing up for yourself, or taking a step toward healing.

  • How did you feel in these moments?

  • What did you learn about yourself?

Reclaiming your self-image is a journey.

When you start to see your value and beauty, it impacts every aspect of your existence.

It fuels self-confidence, encourages healthier relationships, and fosters a sense of peace and purpose.

It often begins with small, yet impactful steps.

With time and support, you can start to see yourself not as a broken being, but as a resilient warrior.

Transforming your self-image is a reclamation of identity, a restoration of dignity, and a resurgence of hope.

Embrace the journey. Keep moving forward.

And celebrate the incredible person you are.
